New item from Charles Parker
Following recent public (on the internet) postings from well known people talking about loosing their faith, the Christian rock singer John Cooper has written on Facebook: “We must stop making worship leaders and thought leaders or influencers or cool people or 'relevant' people the most influential people in Christendom…. we are in a dangerous place when the church is looking to 20 year old worship singers as our source of truth…. We now have a church culture that learns who God is from singing modern praise songs rather than from the teachings of the Word.” More here.
On the other hand, when established celebrities (ie famous people outside of Christian circles) promote Christ and witness to his saving power, it can only be a good thing (can't it ?). The American rapper and record producer Kanye West is now hosting 'Sunday Services' which attract big congregations, and following one of these Justin Bieber recently posted a video of the pastor preaching which went to his 117 million Instagram followers with the caption “what would happen if you put your trust in Jesus?” and a second video of the service with the caption, “put your trust in Jesus” as reported here.
I knew that Justin Bieber professed to being a Christian but I didn't know until recently that so does Alice Cooper. Alice is a man who, as a pioneer of heavy-metal / death-metal music become an alcoholic and a drug addict. He's now 71 and over the last decade has spoken about how God “got a hold of my life and turned me upside down, which was really to turn me the right way up”. He recently gave his testimony at a church in Ohio (more here). I'm reminded that Dennis Wrigley often said that the church would be revived by people who had hit rock bottom. Alice Cooper still tours with some pretty dark sounding shows, but maybe he reaches a section of society that a lot of us would not choose to associate with.
